Bertoia Chair with plastic shell

In the early 1950s, Italian designer Harry Bertoia designed an entire series of chairs, recliners, and stools for Hans and Florence Knoll. Among them is the plastic chair from the “ Bertoia ” series, which has been available again since 2015—marking the designer’s 100th birthday.

Plastic Chair with Steel Base

The Plastic Chair is a variation of the “ Bertoia ” wire-frame family, all of which are hand-drawn and hand-welded using a highly complex process. The “ Bertoia ” plastic chair consists of a plastic seat shell, available in various colors, and a welded steel frame that is chrome-plated or, upon request, available with a white or black finish. The chair’s delicate appearance belies the strength and durability of its construction, and it is also surprisingly comfortable. The comfort of the Knoll chair can be further enhanced with the optional seat cushion.

Today, the “ Bertoia ” chairs are featured in many collections at renowned design museums. They boast a classic, modern design that enhances any setting. The collection’s delicate design language is more reminiscent of a sculpture than of classic seating, yet the chairs, armchairs, and stools are extremely comfortable and meet all the practical requirements of seating furniture.
