Bertoia Diamond Wire-frame armchair

Whether chrome-plated, satin-finished chrome, or plastic-coated (Rilsan protective coating), the wire mesh of the Diamond Chair—designed by Harry Bertoia and produced by Knoll—has served as a model for generations of aspiring young designers. The Diamond Chair is part of an entire series of seating, recliners, and stools designed by Harry Bertoia in the early 1950s. All pieces in this & “wire-frame furniture & ” are hand-drawn and hand-welded using a highly complex process. For this armchair, Bertoia—a trained sculptor and silversmith who viewed his chairs as “studies in space, form, and metal”—turned a square on its side and gently stretched it—a play on form with a pleasing result: the armchair is light and comfortable. Today, Bertoia’s Diamond Chair is featured in many collections at renowned design museums. It boasts a classic, modern design that enhances any setting. Its delicate form is more reminiscent of a sculpture than an armchair, yet the Diamond Chair is extremely comfortable and meets all the practical requirements of a piece of seating furniture.
Bertoia Diamond ’s armchair is and remains a fascinating study in bent round rods and an icon among seating furniture. Knoll offers the Diamond Chair in various versions: with or without a seat cushion, fully upholstered, with a chrome-plated or satin-chrome-plated frame, as well as with a frame featuring a Rilsan protective coating for outdoor use. In addition, the Diamond armchair is available in a larger version and as a smaller children’s version.
