Sella It is undoubtedly one of the great icons of Italian design of the 20. century. The stool was designed by the Castiglioni brothers, Achille and Pier Giacomo, who created it in 1957. At the time, the stool was considered too radical, which is why it has only been mass-produced since 1983 by the Italian premium manufacturer Zanotta .
The stool’s elegance seems almost bizarre when one considers that the seat is a traditional racing bicycle saddle. Placed on a pink-painted steel rod and topped with a sturdy cast-iron base, the result is a composition that almost magically creates an exceptionally harmonious and elegant object.
Sella Together with the Mezzadro stool—for which the Castiglioni brothers repurposed a tractor seat as the seat—it is considered the most extreme design by the creative duo. With “ Sella ,” the brothers demonstrated their knack for incorporating everyday objects into their designs in original ways.
As such, the stool is representative of the entire “ Zanotta ” collection, which showcases Italian design from the mid- 20. th century to the present day.
