Panton was acutely observant of his surroundings and viewed everything as a source of inspiration for his designs. The Fun lamp, created in 1964, is a wonderful example of his remarkable attention to detail. Here, he combines naturalness, creativity, and functionality to create a design piece that appeals to all the senses. Crafted from numerous mother-of-pearl elements, the lamp captivates with a multifaceted play of light that nevertheless appears natural and delicate. In addition, the small elements produce a soft sound reminiscent of a gentle chime, creating a contemplative sense of calm.

Verpan ’s Pearl Lamp

The Fun 10DM is composed of semi-transparent, round mother-of-pearl plates that are connected to one another in a movable manner by small metal rings: organized into chains of varying lengths, the plates hang from four metal hoops. The actual light source of the “ Verpan ” lamp, however, is hidden behind the plates—like the pearl inside a shell. It’s no coincidence that the lamp is also nicknamed “Mother of Pearl” (M.O.P.). Given its fragile and graceful appearance, one could Fun lamp could just as easily be called the “Mother of All Pearls.”
