They are elegant and delicate, allowing String to climb up the walls like dainty “ladders.” The simple, modernist design made the shelves famous shortly after their introduction in 1949. Unlike many other shelving systems, assembling the individual elements is incredibly simple: the base consists of the side, ladder-like struts and the individual shelves. In addition, the shelving unit can be expanded with several other components, such as a magazine rack, a cabinet with sliding doors, or a work surface, transforming the shelving unit into a desk.
