The Story Behind the German Candle Classic

The Stoff Nagel candleholder is an icon of postwar German design. Its story begins as early as 20 years before the first design, with the family Nagel who lived in a small village near Cologne after World War II and earned a living making handmade ashtrays, vases, and candleholders. It was the candleholder’s unusual, geometric shape that made it the talk of the art and design scene in the late 1960s and brought it into countless homes and apartments. The idea came to Hans Nagel during a fall on a ski vacation.
