Table Lamp by Poul Henningsen
The PH 3½-2½ table lamp is part of a lighting collection by Louis Poulsen , which also includes the PH 3½-3 pendant lamp and the PH 3½-2½ floor lamp. The lamp was designed by Poul Henningsen, who created the original lamp as early as 1920 and whose initials still form the lamp’s name today.Optimal Lighting Ambience with a Three-Shade System
The original lamp designed by Poul Henningsen was characterized by functionalism. This is primarily due to his functional approach to what he wanted to achieve with his lamp: namely, to create a lamp that produces optimal lighting ambience in any setting. The small PH 3½-2½ table lamp was designed based on the principle of a reflective three-shade system that directs most of the light downward.
The white-lacquered interior of the top shade gently directs the light downward. The two lower opal glass shades provide a large, glare-free surface. This ensures optimal use of the light source to create a cozy and functional light.
The light falls exactly where it’s supposed to. It doesn’t cause glare, yet it illuminates the area beneath the lamp in a functional, pleasant, and—last but not least—very atmospheric way. One is almost tempted to say, in a decorative way. In any case, the table lamp is a decorative object, whether it’s on or off.
A re-edition of the original, down to the last detail
The upper shade is made of die-cast aluminum and features a white-lacquered interior and a lacquered exterior available in various colors. The freedom to choose among the colors allows you to make the lamp’s presence stand out more or less prominently, depending on your boldness, imagination, and creativity. In addition, the top shade features a white-lacquered, rolled edge that makes it appear more voluminous and further accentuates the iconic profile of the three-shade lamp. The lower shades of the PH 3½-2½ are made of hand-blown, opalized, three-layered glass. The shades are glossy on the inside and sandblasted on the outside, resulting in a soft and diffuse light distribution.
The shade holder and base are a unique detail that attests to the precision with which Poul Henningsen crafted each lamp. The body is made of velvety, matte brown copper. The lamp is also available with a three-shade system made entirely of opal glass, with bases in brass finished in high-gloss chrome or black metallized.
Decorative lighting for any room
Thanks to its compact size, the PH 3½-2½ table lamp in particular offers excellent placement options in rooms where small focal points of light are needed to create a pleasant atmosphere and highlight the room’s dimensions.Whether you’re looking for a lighting concept for your living room, dining room, bedroom, or any other room, the entire PH 3½ family not only provides great light but also creates a highly decorative and appealing interior.
The PH 3½-2½ table lamp is equipped with an E14 socket that accommodates a wide selection of light sources, including several LED options. The lamp is 100% glare-free.
Architecture and Lighting: Poul Henningsen
Poul Henningsen was born in Copenhagen, the son of the famous Danish actress Agnes Henningsen. He did not earn a degree in architecture, but studied at the Frederiksberg Technical School from 1911 to 1914 and then at the Technical College in Copenhagen from 1914 to 1917. He also began applying traditional functionalist architecture. However, his professional interest soon focused primarily on lighting design—and that is what he is famous for.Exquisitely Designed Lighting— Louis Poulsen
