AJ Floor Lamp by Arne Jacobsen

With the AJ floor lamps, Louis Poulsen pays tribute to designer Arne Jacobsen and celebrates the 60th anniversary of the AJ lighting series. The collection features both classic and contemporary colors that have been carefully selected to complement Arne Jacobsen’s existing color palette. Dark green, ochre, rust red, midnight blue, eggplant, and two shades of gray are available.

Floor Lamp for the SAS Royal Hotel

The AJ floor lamp was designed for the Radisson SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen, which opened in 1960. Arne Jacobsen not only designed the building but also created the entire interior, including furniture, cutlery, textiles, and lighting, thereby creating one of the world’s first design hotels.

Swiveling Shade with an Asymmetrical Shape

The AJ Floor Lamp stands out for its extraordinary, swiveling shade, whose asymmetrical shape distributes the light accordingly. The lamp base, with its characteristic opening, contributes to the elegance and sense of weightlessness of the design. As a result, it has long been considered one of the modern design classics of the 20. century.

Conical metal shade

The angles of the

conical metal shade

are designed to match the angle of the lamp holder. At least, that was the original intention; in reality, however, the angle was slightly adjusted for optical correction. When the lamp is tilted downward, the edge of the lamp holder is horizontal. The interior of the shade is enameled in matte white. The shade provides effective light control; you cannot see into the light source. Rumor has it that the hole in the base of the lamp was originally intended for use as an ashtray.

Danish Design Legend: Arne Jacobsen

Arne Jacobsen was born and raised in Copenhagen. In 1927, he graduated from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen with a degree in architecture. He worked at the office of the City Architect of Copenhagen until he opened his own architectural firm two years later. Arne Jacobsen is a world-renowned Danish modernist architect. The buildings he designed are located in Denmark, Germany, and the United Kingdom.
