The " Quaderna " bench is produced by Zanotta based on a design by the designers at Superstudio. It is part of a product series in which the designers have covered numerous pieces of furniture with a strictly geometric checkered pattern. The Superstudio design studio was founded in Florence in 1966 and quickly became one of the leading figures of “Radical Design.” This radical design approach was part of the protest movement of the time and sought to fundamentally transform the conservative design landscape, rather than simply designing arbitrary products within a predetermined framework. The furniture in the “ Quaderna ” collection from 1970 is likely Superstudio’s best-known work. For their “ Quaderna ” bench, the designers at Superstudio chose austere forms: The bench consists solely of three plywood panels arranged at right angles, covered with a white print. This geometric construction is complemented by the checkered pattern that adorns the entire bench. This extraordinary design earned the “ Quaderna ” series the Gold Medal at the M.I.A. international fair as early as 1971. Today, the furniture can be seen in numerous design museums, such as the Museum of Applied Arts in Cologne and the Museum of Decorative Arts in Berlin. The “ Quaderna ” collection is produced by the Italian company Zanotta . A side table and a desk are also available to complement the bench.
