Prouvé Dining Table
Jean Prouvé designed the “ Guéridon ” table for the University of Paris; it stands out above all for its structural clarity. This wooden table proves that modern tables do not necessarily have to be made of steel and glass. To achieve this effect, Prouvé combined his signature, architecturally inspired design language with natural materials. Although originally conceived in response to the metal shortages of World War II, the wooden construction of the “ Guéridon ” remained compelling even after the war. In this way, the French designer created the dining table in 1949, which draws inspiration from the coffee table of the same name designed in 1944. Jean Prouvé succeeded in creating a table that remains modern to this day by skillfully combining simple elements: a heavy tabletop rests on three legs made of solid oak. The table legs, as in some of the French designer’s other designs, are sturdy and prominent. This lends the “ Guéridon ” dining table—now produced by Vitra —a sense of visual stability, while its clean lines make it appear both timeless and modern.
