The Compas Direction is a reissue of a piece of furniture designed by Jean Prouvé in 1953: Back then, the French designer was right on trend with this desk; today, the piece has been updated by Vitra . In 2011, Vitra collaborated with the fashion label G-Star to reissue a collection of furniture pieces by the French designer and architect Jean Prouvé. The designs were presented at the “ Vitra ” campus in Weil am Rhein, and the collaboration resulted in nine mass-produced products: the RAW Edition. The contemporary interpretation of Prouvé’s classic furniture pieces was so well received that Vitra has added several items from the collection to its permanent lineup—including the Compas Direction . Originally designed in 1953, Compas Direction is a true Prouvé classic: with its slender forms, smooth surfaces, and asymmetrical legs, it epitomizes fine 1950s design. Equally important for that design era: the clean, functional lines ensure that practicality is not overlooked. These qualities make the Compas Direction for modern living as well. Vitra manufactures the redesigned Compas Direction from powder-coated steel and a solid top made of oiled oak. The natural material creates an intriguing contrast to the basalt-colored base, lending Jean Prouvé’s desk a striking yet understated elegance.
