A Pendant Light Known as the “Mother of All Pearls”

The Panton Fun M.O.P. light also marked the beginning of the Danish company Verpan . It was the first product from the then-new company. The Fun Lamp bears the nickname “Mother of Pearl” (M.O.P.) primarily because of the material Panton used: mother-of-pearl. However, given its fragile and graceful appearance, the Fun Lamp could just as easily be called the “Mother of Pearls.” Verner Panton always viewed the world around him as a source of inspiration for his designs. The Fun Lamp (M.O.P.), designed in 1964, is the best example of Panton’s remarkable attention to detail. Naturalness combined with creative design and functional requirements results in a lamp that appeals to a wide range of the senses. The lamp captivates not only with its multifaceted play of light. Its numerous mother-of-pearl elements also produce soft, tinkling sounds reminiscent of a distant glockenspiel, simultaneously creating a sense of sensual tranquility.

round

mother-of-pearl plates that are flexibly connected to one another by small metal rings: Organized into chains of varying lengths (max. H 60 cm), the plates hang from three metal hoops (Ø 45 cm). The actual light source of the “ Verpan ” lamp, however, is hidden behind the plates—like a pearl inside a shell. The centrally mounted light bulb (E27, max. 75 W) casts light onto the mother-of-pearl plates, which reflect the characteristic luster of mother-of-pearl. Due to their lightness, the plates are gently set in motion—for example, by a light breeze—creating lively and varied light and sound effects. The cable, with its black fabric sheathing, has a subtle appearance and stays in the background, ensuring that Verner Panton’s masterfully composed play of light remains the focal point at all times. Every “ Verpan ” product is delivered with a certificate of authenticity. This certificate guarantees that these are original products, still manufactured today by Verpan according to Verner Panton’s strict quality standards.
