Molded Wood Chair with Ergonomic Seat Shell

The design by Sam Hecht and Kim Colin (Industrial
Facility) translates the established design language of the iconic bentwood chairs 214 and 209 into a material-efficient, stackable bentwood chair with an ergonomic seat shell mounted on a lightweight tubular steel frame. Upon request, bentwood armrests can be added to this seating, which is universally suitable for both residential and commercial use and available in various wood types and finishes. The design of the S 220 Thonet ’s chair design pushes the technical possibilities of bentwood—which has always been a driving force behind innovation at Thonet —to the absolute limit. The S 220 impresses with its controlled organic form and precise lines, while the molded wood shell comfortably cradles and supports the user. The chair’s elegant waist allows the seat shell to swing comfortably. Its front edge, which is smoothly rounded downward, perfectly captures the S 220 characteristic harmonious interplay of material quality, aesthetics, and functionality: This “waterfall edge,” as the designers call it, prevents pressure points, thereby enhancing seating comfort while seamlessly integrating the curves of the tubular steel base.
