Modern Furniture Designs with a Sense of Lightness

The S 179 serving cart from Thonet , designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, embodies the principle of modernism in its purest form: form consistently follows function. The delicate construction of chrome-plated steel tubing is supported by a single, continuously curved central tube that also serves as the load-bearing structure. The cart rests on three points—two wheels and the front leg of the frame—and can be easily lifted and moved using the black full-grain leather handle featuring the “ Thonet ” logo. Two shelves made of tinted clear glass offer ample space for glasses, bottles, and bar accessories, but are equally suitable for books or decorative objects. The glass surfaces are held in place by a frame made of chrome-plated flat steel, while a rail— Thonet —on the lower level provides additional safety. As part of the reissue, the serving cart was slightly enlarged to meet today’s living and usage requirements—without losing the iconic character of the original.
