The Bauhaus Lamp by Wilhelm Wagenfeld
The Wagenfeld lamp is one of the most famous lamps of the Bauhaus era. It was designed in 1924 by Wilhelm Wagenfeld (1900–1990). After completing an apprenticeship at a silverware factory and attending a drawing academy, he was accepted as a journeyman into the world-famous Bauhaus workshop, where he created the “Wagenfeld Lamp &,” also known as the “ & Bauhaus Lamp & .” With his designs in metal and glass, Wagenfeld became one of the most important industrial designers of his time. The Wagenfeld lamp consists of an opal-colored glass dome; the base, column, and trim are made of nickel-plated metal. Metal hemispheres beneath the base plate—which are invisible to the viewer—give the lamp its “ & ” “lightness & .” The lamp is manufactured according to the original dimensions and materials of Tecnolumen . All lamps are sequentially numbered beneath the base plate and bear the Bauhaus and Tecnolumen logos. The lamp is shipped without a light bulb. The Wagenfeld lamp was awarded the federal “Gute Form & ” prize in 1982 and was named one of the “Best 200 for the Year 2000 & .”
