Lamp with a glass dome and solid base

A lamp series inspired by hi-fi: Danish designer Simon Legald created the sophisticated “ Amp ” lamp series for Normann Copenhagen . Glass, marble, and brass combine to create a sense of visual lightness and sensual weight. The result is a look that is both nostalgic and modern. The idea for the shape of the “ Amp ” table lamp came to designer Simon Legald while he was restoring an old radio from the 1960s at home. While searching for a replacement part for the radio, he noticed the glow of the tube amplifier. The simple, oval shape and the L amp -style shield allude to this—as does the name Amp , the English term for a tube amplifier. The proportions of the “ Amp ” lamps by Normann Copenhagen have been carefully crafted. Normann Copenhagen , and Legald have emphasized the functional details, such as the way the shade rests on the base of the “ Amp ” table lamp. The combination of materials creates an interesting contrast between the transparent, lightweight glass and the solid, heavy marble or brass base. Simon Legald explains: & “Sometimes you can’t even say exactly why an idea for a new object comes about. But in this case, the inspiration came directly from a radio and hi-fi equipment. This is very evident in the design of Amp . The round, transparent shape of a tube has something very special about it. I thought it would go very well with an L amp . I chose a type of glass that’s also used for hourglasses, among other things. The shape was meant to be curvy and tapered. To balance out the delicate glass, I chose marble.
