Chair made of steel and recycled fishing nets
The Ocean Mater chair was designed by Nanna Ditzel in 1955; this reimagined version is manufactured in collaboration with the Danish cleantech company Plastix using recycled fishing nets. The chair consists of a steel frame with a burnished finish and a seat and backrest made from recycled fishing nets and hard plastic. The chair is suitable for both indoor and outdoor use and creates a modern, clean-lined look in any setting.Recycled plastic from our oceans
Mater The chair uses recycled plastic from Plastix, one of the world’s few companies specializing in mechanical recycling. Plastix transforms discarded fishing nets, trawl nets, ropes, and other plastic waste products into valuable recycled plastic raw materials, known as “ & ” “Green Plastics & .” Approximately 960 g of marine plastic waste is used to make one chair. & “If we can create a product that is attractive, functional, and durable—one that helps us clean up the side effects of our collective consumer behavior—it’s a win for everyone. & ,” says Henrik Marstrand, founder and CEO of Mater .From the Ditzels’ archives
Originally manufactured by Kolds Savværk until the late 1950s, the chair and two tables were initially designed for the Ditzels’ personal use. The first design from 1955 consisted of steel frames and wood veneer parts. The reissues were enlarged by five percent to meet modern proportions. The simple forms and lightness of the series embody the Ditzels’ design sensibility, which was at once precise, practical, and playful. Mater , together with Dennie Ditzel, searched the Ditzels’ archive and selected the chair and the two tables for the Ocean series. In this reissue, the series helps reduce plastic waste and contributes to achieving Goals 12, 14, 15, and 17 of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
