Gae Aulenti originally designed the lamp in 1965 for the Olivetti showroom in Paris. Its distinctive silhouette is created by the conical base, the height-adjustable telescopic arm, and the curved diffuser, whose shape is reminiscent of a bat’s outstretched wings. The diffuser, made of white opal methacrylate, diffuses the light softly and evenly, creating a pleasant atmosphere in the living room, bedroom, or workspace. The telescopic arm, made of satin-finished stainless steel, allows for variable height adjustment, making the Pipistrello suitable for use both as a table lamp and as a floor lamp positioned close to the ground. The structure and characteristic knob are made of painted aluminum. Even at the time of its creation, manufacturing the complex-shaped methacrylate diffuser was technically challenging and required innovative production processes. To this day, the Pipistrello is produced by Martinelli Luce and is available in various colors, sizes, and technical versions.
