The “Poltrona di Proust,” created in 1978, is one of Alessandro Mendini’s best-known designs. Together with Magis , the designer has now reimagined his legendary creation. The result is a magnificent armchair made of polyethylene that epitomizes the concept of redesign. As early as 1978, Alessandro Mendini had conceived his Proust armchair as a redesign. Mendini had drawn on classic forms and colors from the Baroque and Impressionist periods, reinterpreted them, and brought them together in his “Poltrona di Proust.” It all began with a fabric pattern for which Alessandro Mendini drew inspiration from the French writer Marcel Proust. While researching Proust’s world, he came across a neo-Baroque armchair that fascinated him so much that he expanded his work on the fabric pattern to include the design of an upholstered piece of furniture. Mendini’s classic Proust armchair from 1978 featured a hand-painted polka-dot pattern that adorned every part of the magnificent armchair and reflected the Impressionism of the painter Paul Signac. The avant-garde armchair was originally intended as a one-of-a-kind piece, but was later produced in individual instances and limited editions and is now manufactured and distributed by Cappellini. Together with Magis , Alessandro Mendini has now reinterpreted his world-famous “Poltrona di Proust” once again. The result is “ Magis Proust,” a rotomolded polyethylene armchair designed for industrial production.
