Round pendant lamp made of opal glass

The VL Ring Crown pendant lamp by Vilhelm Lauritzen for Louis Poulsen is a true classic by Vilhelm Lauritzen, who designed the lamp back in the 1940s. In contrast to the iconic PH lamps, he wanted to create a pendant lamp that would stand out with its round glass shade and be extremely practical. “The lamp should be easy to dust, and dirt shouldn’t collect on the floor. It mustn’t shatter at the first scratch, and the light bulb must be easy to replace. Made of hand-blown glass and polished brass

The shade of the pendant light is made of glossy white, three-layered, hand-blown opal glass. The suspension system is made of untreated, polished brass. The light is part of a series that Lauritzen designed for the Danish Broadcasting Building in Copenhagen. The pendant light provides glare-free lighting in any room and is a real eye-catcher, especially when hung above a dining table or kitchen island. The series also includes a chandelier in various designs and a wall sconce.

Danish Functionalism: Vilhelm Lauritzen

Vilhelm Lauritzen (1894–1984) is one of Denmark’s most significant architects and a pioneering figure of Danish functionalism. Many of his buildings, such as the Nørrebro Theater (1931–1932), the Daells Varehus department store (1928–1935), the Radiohuset broadcasting center (1936–1941), and Copenhagen’s first airport (1937–1939), embody the essence of the modern world. Other significant buildings designed by Vilhelm Lauritzen include the Vega (1953–1956)—formerly the House of the People, which is now used for concerts—as well as the Shell Building (1950–1951) and the Danish Embassy in Washington (1958–1960). In particular, the listed Broadcasting House and the terminal of Copenhagen’s old airport are considered unique monuments of Modernism in European architecture.
