In 1966, the Platner Knoll collection, with its decorative, gentle, and aesthetic forms, irresistibly captured the spirit of the times. Today, the Platner armchair is an undisputed classic. Drawing on his experience working with Eero Saarinen, it was no surprise that the second generation of Knoll’s single-legged “ & ” “Pedestal & ” furniture was created by Warren Platner . Parallel to the shift in cultural values during the 1960s, furniture also became more expressive—a trend for which the Knoll Platner armchair is a prime example: simple in form, yet striking in execution. Platner wanted to create, with his steel wire collection, a furniture series that was more pleasing to the eye than the austere designs of his time. At the same time, however, the designs were not to be overly ornamental, nor were they to overshadow the chair’s function. The Platner armchair consists of hundreds of curved, nickel-plated steel wires that are welded together. The steel frame serves both as a structural element and as a decorative feature. Knoll manufactures the seat shell from fiberglass with cold-foam cushions. On the underside, the Platner armchair has a transparent plastic ring on the underside that protects both the floor and the chair from damage. Upon request, the frame of the Knoll Platner armchair is also available in a bronze-colored finish. Additional colors and upholstery fabrics are available for the upholstery.
