Free-Swinging Side Chair
The legendary MR Side Chair by Knoll embodies Ludwig Mies van der Rohe’s early steel designs. The choice of materials was inspired by Bauhaus master Marcel Breuer, while the design is a modern interpretation of the iron rocking chairs from the 1 9. . Around 1927, Mies van der Rohe created his MR cantilever chair, thereby making his mark on the history of furniture design. Even though Mart Stam is generally considered the creator of the first steel cantilever chair, the MR Chair is the version that made this revolutionary piece of furniture aesthetically appealing without compromise. Mies van der Rohe’s idea likely originated when Mart Stam, at a meeting of the Deutscher Werkbund, spoke about his concept of a “ & ” chair “ & .” Mies van der Rohe soon set to work and replaced the right angles of the frame with a perfectly curved line, which—unlike the angular frame—also offers better rocking properties and prevents material fatigue —and just like that, the cantilever chair was born, becoming known worldwide by the simple name MR 10. Knoll manufactures the frame of the MR side chair from polished stainless steel; the seat is available in various finishes. Plastic glides are included with the MR chair. Upon request, the MR chair from Knoll is also available as the MR 20 with armrests.
