Charming Wooden Zebra Figurine

The wooden zebra is one of the first figurines in Kay Bojesen ’s collection of wooden animals. Like the others, the zebra straddles the unique line between fantasy figure and design object. The zebra was created long before Bojesen’s most famous animal, the wooden monkey. While the monkey first saw the light of day in 1951, the wooden zebra was created as early as 193 5. This made it one of the Danish designer’s first exotic animals. The Zebra galloped straight from the savanna into Kay Bojesen ’s store in the heart of Copenhagen. It owes its charming stripes to the artist Svend Johansen, who also gave the puffin its colorful plumage.

Just as it was back then, the zebra is still made today from solid beech wood and hand-painted.
