The Crate Dining Bench from HAY . The Crate Collection was originally conceived in 1934 by Dutch architect and designer Gerrit Rietveld as a solution for reusing surplus wooden shipping crates. The Crate Collection has now been reissued in collaboration between Rietveld Originals and HAY . The Crate Dining Bench has remained true to the original design and is characterized by precisely balanced proportions and a transparent construction aimed at minimizing production costs and simplifying the assembly process. The bench’s timeless design—with its gently sloping backrest and seat, and supportive armrests—reflects the designer’s architectural principles: simplicity and spatial efficiency, functionality and comfort, without sacrificing space. Crafted from solid pine, Crate Dining Bench is available in various color options with a water-based finish and is suitable for a range of outdoor settings. Optional seat cushions made from select fabrics can be added for extra comfort.
