CH25 Armchair by Hans J. Wegner

The CH25 armchair was designed in 1950 by Hans J. Wegner as one of four chairs during his first three weeks at Carl Hansen & amp; Søn. At the time, it was considered a rather revolutionary and controversial chair. The armchair stands out for its cool, signature Wegner design and its unusual materials.

With a seat and backrest made of paper yarn

The armchair, with a low seat height of 35 cm, features a frame made of oak or walnut in various finishes. Its sloped seat makes the armchair particularly comfortable. The backrest and seat are carefully hand-woven from paper yarn. Paper yarn was actually a wartime substitute material that proved to be particularly robust and versatile. When Wegner’s armchair was launched in 1950—just a few years after the end of World War II—his choice of material was considered highly controversial and unheard of. Wegner, however, appreciated the material’s appearance and durability.

Elaborate Handcrafting

An experienced weaver needs about 10 hours to craft a seat and a backrest from 400 meters of paper cord. The result is a high-quality, timeless armchair with a uniquely woven pattern. It looks beautiful and inspiring from every angle, making it an eye-catcher in any room.

New color palette in collaboration with Ilse Crawford

To celebrate Hans J. Wegner’s more than 70-year collaboration with Carl Hansen & amp; Søn, the Danish label has teamed up with renowned London-based designer Ilse Crawford to design a new color palette for the first five chairs Wegner created for Carl Hansen & amp; Søn in 1950. The result is a multifaceted reinterpretation of Wegner’s CH22, CH23, CH24, CH25 and CH26 chairs, whose timelessness is further emphasized by the new, rich colors. Evoking the rugged beauty of the Nordic landscape, each color has a slightly translucent finish that allows the grain of the oak wood to show through.
