Birch Veneer Chair

Finnish designer and architect Alvar Aalto is considered a pioneer in the use of laminated wood. Influenced by the German Bauhaus movement, he experimented with this material beginning in 1927 and created numerous designs together with his wife, Aino Aalto. The design for Chair No. 65 was created between 1933 and 193 5. Despite its early origins, the chair has lost none of its charm to this day and, like almost all Aalto products, features the characteristic organic L-shape. Its legs are bent and were subsequently covered with birch veneer. At the time the chair was created, the bending technique—developed specifically by Aalto for this purpose—caused quite a stir and provided stability that remains unmatched to this day. Thanks to its simple, Nordic design, the chair blends perfectly into any setting and can be used as a comfortable seat at both the dining table and the desk.
