Architectural Wall Shelf

Finnish designer and architect Alvar Aalto designed the 112B wall shelf in 1936. The company Artek still manufactures it today based on his classic designs. The shelf of the 112B wall shelf has the same depth as the supports. The way the individual parts are joined together gives the shelf its compact appearance. The brackets of the wall shelf are made of birch wood, and the shelf board is made of birch veneer. The shelf has a clear finish and is available in white or black. A characteristic feature of the Wall Shelf 112B’s design is its triangular, rounded supports, which rest directly on the shelf board. Alvar Aalto also used this shape for the supports of his Coat Rack 109 and his Umbrella Stand 115. Curved shapes of individual parts—such as the brackets on the 112A wall shelf or the legs of tables and chairs—are frequently found in Alvar Aalto’s work and are considered one of his hallmarks. To clean his wooden products, the manufacturer Artek recommends using a damp cloth. Soapy water may also be used if necessary. Finally, the product should be thoroughly dried with a dry cloth.
