Round Bar Stool by Artek

The 64 was designed by designer and architect Alvar Aalto in 1933 for the Teatro Corso in Zurich. Today, this piece is a classic, known worldwide for its timelessness and high recognition value.
The bar stool 64 is a taller version of the Stool 60, and both variants feature Aalto’s signature organic L-shape. The bar stool is made of bent, lacquered birch wood. Upon request, the seat is available covered in laminate or linoleum, as well as in an upholstered version with fabric or leather upholstery.

Then as now, the bending technique used to create it is impressive: a straight piece of solid birch wood is cut along the grain to form a sort of fan. Small, thinly planed wooden strips are then glued to the wood, allowing it to be bent and shaped using steam and heat. The metal ring that originally held the four stool legs together was designed by Aino Aalto, Alvar’s wife, and has been replaced in today’s version with a more fitting ring made of birch wood. The “ 64 ” bar stool is available in heights of 65 cm or 75 cm, making it ideal for kitchen or bar counters.
