Stylish Designer Salt Shaker

Michael Graves had long since established himself as an architect of world renown through his buildings when he took his first steps into the world of product design in the 1980s. Alberto Alessi counts his collaboration with Graves among “my many wonderful experiences as a design manager, ” noting that “his path was enthusiastic and contradictory, marked by great successes and popularity.” In this new field, however, Graves’ work was also viewed very critically. Nevertheless, his creations continue to enjoy great popularity to this day. The MGSAL salt shaker—clearly inspired by the shape of a rocket—is, along with the matching 9098 pepper mill, one of the best-known and most popular products Graves designed for Alessi . Where the pepper mill ends with its characteristic wings, the stainless-steel salt shaker features a lid and closure made of PA. With his products—not least the MGSAL salt shaker—Graves played a key role in helping Alessi establish itself as an innovative and experimental design studio since the 1980s.
