“ Pulcina ” by Alessi is the brainchild of architect Michele De Lucchi and is an espresso pot for true coffee lovers. The revolutionary design combines technology developed by illycaffè based on research into heat flow dynamics with the design expertise of Alessi .

The ideal pot shape for perfect espresso

Pulcina is the result of a long search: illycaffè and Alessi wanted to discover how the shape of the espresso pot could be optimized to improve the organoleptic properties of espresso and bring them out more fully. And so they analyzed what happens inside an espresso pot. As a result, Illy was able to determine the ideal shape of the boiler—the lower part of the pot where the water boils—for perfect espresso.

Only the best goes into the cup

Thanks to the special design of the boiler’s interior, the “ Pulcina ” interrupts the flow of coffee at exactly the right moment. This prevents the “volcanic phase”—that final moment of extraction that leaves a burnt, bitter aftertaste. Only the very best of the coffee makes it into the cup, allowing its full-bodied, rounded aroma to be fully savored.

Beak-shaped spout for drip-free pouring

The spout is relatively pronounced. Its distinctive V-shape resembles a chick’s beak (Italian: pulcino). It is designed with such precision that it allows for drip-free pouring. Pulcina is practical, functional, and requires no special knowledge. The coffee is prepared exactly the same way as in traditional espresso pots. The “ Pulcina ” espresso pot by Michele De Lucchi for Alessi is made of cast aluminum and is available in various sizes. The handle and knob are made of polyamide in black or red.
