Design Classic: Juicer by Philippe Starck

On the island of Capraia—during a vacation in Italy—Philippe Starck designed the Juicy Salif . The designer sketched the basic concept for the juicer on a napkin, which Alessi finally brought to life in 1990. The Juicy Salif lemon squeezer is one of the most iconic design objects of the 20. century, representing the Italian home goods company Alessi like no other product. The lemon squeezer is & “a work of art and a ‘conversation piece’ that buyers covet as an abstract sculpture & ” according to Italian writer Umberto Eco. The juicer captivates with its futuristic look, reminiscent of both a rocket and the delicate form of a spider—its actual function takes a back seat.
