Designer Ashtray in the Bauhaus Style

Alessi ’s ashtray consists of two elements, and its design would be described by most people today as & “classic & .” This is because the cylindrical shape has become second nature to the viewer today, even though it was only in 1926 that it became part of the birth of industrial design—a field that emerged as a further development of traditional blacksmithing at the Bauhaus metal workshop and continues to shape aesthetic concepts to this day. The base is cylindrical in shape and is based on the fundamental element of the circle. In the center, the cone protrudes, culminating in the fundamental element of the sphere—specifically, a hemisphere. The conical lid fits precisely onto this, ensuring that odors are contained within the ashtray. The use of basic geometric shapes is characteristic of Marianne Brandt, who designed this elegant object at the Bauhaus in Dessau. Thus, both smokers and nonsmokers benefit from this ashtray, which has been produced since 1985 by Alessi under license from the Bauhaus Archive in Berlin.
