Minimalist Folding Chair by David Chipperfield
Piana is a folding chair and the first chair ever that Italian manufacturer Alessi has helped develop in its more than 90-year history. This makes the Alessi chair all the more special. Piana is the result of a collaboration between the two Italian companies Alessi and designer and architect David Chipperfield. With “ Piana ,” designer David Chipperfield took on the challenge of designing a product of which countless versions already exist. The result is a folding chair tailored to practical needs. Visually, “ Piana ” is simple and stripped down to the essentials. The iconic folding chair is instantly recognizable as such, features no frills, and is extremely sturdy. Its clean, function-first design makes “ Piana ” highly versatile. David Chipperfield’s goal was to design a chair that could be used just as easily in public spaces, at events, and at receptions as it could in private homes—at the dining table, on the balcony, or in the garden.Made of glass-fiber-reinforced polypropylene
The quality of the materials used is correspondingly high, and the design’s practical features are ingenious. Piana features a synchronized system for folding the seat open and closed. This system was implemented with a single pivot point and without any visible fasteners. As a result, Piana can be folded down compactly and, in this form, is barely wider than its own chair leg. Piana is made of glass-fiber-reinforced polypropylene. The surface is matte and slip-resistant, and the entire chair is 100% recyclable. Thanks to its materials, the folding chair is suitable for both indoor and outdoor use.
