Seine Bugholztechnik perfektionierte er in den 1850er Jahren. 1853 überschrieb er seine Firma seinen Söhnen, die Firma hieß fortan „Gebrüder Thonet“. Den großen Durchbruch erreichte die Firma 1859 mit dem Wiener Kaffeehausstuhl – dem Stuhl Nr. 14. Der Stuhl ist bis heute das gelungenste Industrieprodukt aller Zeiten und Michael Thonet gilt als Pionier des Industriedesigns. Mit ihm begann die Zeit der modernen Möbelindustrie.\u003c\/p\u003e \u003cp\u003eAuf einem Kubikmeter einer Transportkiste hatten 36 zerlegte Nr. 14 Stühle inklusive Schrauben Platz und konnten so kostengünstig in die ganze Welt verfrachtet werden. Montiert wurden sie vor Ort. Allein bis 1930 wurden 50 Millionen Stühle produziert und eroberten die Cafehäuser der europäischen Metropolen. Durch den Nr. 14 Stuhl verändert sich auch das Aussehen der öffentlichen Plätze der Stadt.
