In the 1940s, the simple three-legged stool became a huge bestseller. The famous design was created for the library in Viipuri and spread around the world.
The minimalist and functional design was revolutionary at the time. Instead of the usual steel, architect and designer Alvar Aalto used birch wood, which is abundant in Finland. For this reason, the extraordinary stool was also affordable for lower-income families. The wood is bent using a process developed specifically by Aalto, and the legs and seat are glued together to form a single visual unit. While many European designers glorified the industrial revolution, their Scandinavian colleagues turned to nature. Alvar Aalto was a trendsetter with his organic forms, as seen in the Savoy vase—was one of the trendsetters; his vase is world-famous today. The same natural forms recur time and again in his work: in the undulating walls of the Finnish Pavilion at the 1939 New York World’s Fair, in the architecture of the Düsseldorf Schauspielhaus, in armchairs, screen partitions, and tea carts.

Gently curved vase

Aalto was firmly convinced that design should be human down to the smallest detail. The rolling cart is equipped with two wheels and a frame made of bent plywood, which was manufactured using the bending process.
